Fig. 2. Mechanism of lactate-induced cerebral vasodilation. Lactate in the extracellular space enhances vasodilation through its interaction with prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) signaling. This occurs when lactate inhibits the prostaglandin transporter (PGT), which prevents astrocytes from taking up and degrading PGE2, thereby prolonging PGE2-mediated vasodilatory effects.
